However, the glass surface has good gliding properties and the inputs are precisely implemented on the touchscreen. Despite the newer SoC, there are small jerks every now and then. The system speed of the GS5 is satisfactory. Features such as VoLTE and WLAN calling are supported. The speaker sounds a bit hollow but convinces with an overall decent intelligibility in quiet environments. Although we remained intelligible on Gigaset's smartphone, we did sound very muffled and the volume fluctuates a lot. The noise suppression leaves a rather mediocre impression in loud ambient noise. All call participants are clearly understandable and are heard naturally. The voice quality of the GS5 is good when held to the ear. The supported mobile frequencies cover the most important bands for Europe but not many more and there's no 5G. The AC WLAN delivers stable transmission rates to our reference Netgear Nighthawk AX12 router. The communication modules of the Gigaset GS5 work on an adequate level. Android 12 is supposed to be offered next year, and Gigaset promises security updates for up to three years. Google Android 11 is used as the operating system with minimal modifications. The lack of DRM certification is disappointing. Wirelessly, the smartphone can be charged with up to 15 W.
Gigaset does not provide detailed information about the charging speeds and only said that the battery can be recharged within two hours, which should be possible roughly with an 18 W power adapter. The microSD slot does not support an exFAT file system, however. In addition to a full-fledged dual-SIM (nano) slot, there is also a microSD storage slot that can accept memory cards up to 512 GB. The removable battery is easy to access, and removing the SIM tray beforehand is no longer necessary. The glass back is neatly framed in the plastic as in the GS4, but the card slots are now under the cover. The Gigaset GS5 looks a lot like its predecessor, but it is a bit heavier and only has a dual-camera setup on the back that is still flush with the replaceable back cover.
